The ADAD online practitioners and musicians directories can be used to find a dance artists, companies or musicians whose creative product draws on the Dance of the African Diaspora. Black dance/African Peoples dance (the terms generally used in Britain) is difficult to classify especially when we are referring to the work of dance artists and theatre practitioners.
For its own purpose, ADAD groups the Dance of the African Diaspora in to five categories: ‘African dance’, ‘Caribbean dance’, ‘African-American dance/Jazz’, ‘Neo-Classical dance/Fusion’ and ‘Urban/Street dance’. ADAD sees these labels as umbrella names for a wide range of practices and uses them to suggest the emphasis of the practices grouped in this way rather than their totality. The work of many practitioners could fit into two or more categories i.e. a dance piece could be considered as being all of the following: African, Urban and Fusion. We have decided to give Caribbean and African - American dances their own categories and not place them within African dance to give these practices their own space. Other dance practices from the African Diaspora i.e. Afro-Peruvian dance are placed within the African dance category. Artists are free to register for more than one category if they so wish.
